Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian was born in Canada, but was raised in the U.S. She's worked as a media critic since 1995. She is the founder of Feminist Frequency which is a website with videos and guest posts discussing the depictions of females in popular culture. Anita Sarkeesian was a Canadian as well as an American feminist media critic. Feminist Frequency examines the way women are represented in the popular media. Alongside working to bring awareness to the harassment and targeted attacks on women, as well as other minorities, she is dedicated to breaking the stereotypes associated with popular culture. Sarkeesian is a graduate in the fields of social thought and political science from York University. She is also an internationally acclaimed public speaker. Sarkeesian has given speeches at the TEDxWomen Festival as well as to the United Nations Broadband Working Group. Interested in issues concerning gender identities and feminisms from at an early age, she created her site Feminist Frequency in 2009, while studying at the university. The ambitious lady planned to create a web series on gender-based representations in video games and found herself the target of a harassment online campaign. The attack wasn't enough to stop her. In fact, it strengthened her commitment as a feminist and media critic. Numerous awards have been given to her in recognition of all of the contribution she has have made. Anita Sarkeesian has been a media critic for several years and was the creator of Feminist Frequency. The non-profit educational organization studies women's roles in pop culture narratives.
