DeWitt first performed on stage at the age of 13 years old. When she was 13 she began performing on stage. She graduated with a Bachelor in Arts degree from Ball State University. In the summer of her stock production she was encouraged by the director to enroll at UCLA's Department of Theater MFA Program. She was given the Master of Fine Arts Fellowship as well as the Clifton Webb Scholarship. While attending UCLA she worked as a secretary until her first appearance on TV in an episode of Baretta.Contrary to the rumor that she was taught by actor Abe Vigoda, Dewitt has said that the two never had a conversation. DeWitt's character as Janet Wood in Three's Company's 1977-1984 run is her most famous. She was part of the show's pilot and was employed. She also appeared as Janet in an episode in 1979 from the spinoff series The Ropers. Following the show's conclusion, Three's Company ended in 1984, DeWitt appeared in an episode of Finder of Lost Loves in 1984, following which she resigned from acting for a number of years. Her acting resume included participation in the production of Noises Off at Michigan's Cherry County Playhouse in June 1991. In the following year, she appeared in the 1995 TV comedy film Spring Fling! Pinky and the Brain featured the character modelled on her voice by another actress in 1997. The actress was in the episode Cybill and also made a brief appearance on Living Single's penultimate episode. Her 2000s work include television shows like Hope Island, The Nick at Nite Holiday Special and Call of the Wild.
